Acute Care Management

Acute care management of all soft tissue injuries (ie. swollen sprained knee or ankle) is offered. We will attempt to accommodate patients by providing immediate assessment if scheduling permits. Treatment may include the application of protective bracing, bandaging and splinting, ice, interferential current, laser therapy, and/or pneumatic intermittent compression.

Electrotherapeutic Modalities

Various modalities including ultrasound, T.E.N.S., low intensity laser therapy and electrical neurostimulation will be utilized in the treatment of pain, muscular weakness and swelling.

Laser Therapy (Low Intensity Laser)

Therapeutic laser delivers a focused beam of light energy photons that are absorbed selectively by injured cells and transformed into biochemical energy in the mitochondria of the cells. The effect is photochemical. The converted energy stimulates production of new proteins needed for cellular repair of injured soft tissue. Excellent modality for wound healing, anti-inflammatory application and pain control.

Exercise Program

A customized individualized exercise program can be created for your needs. This can be accomplished within the following parameters, principles and exercise goals:

  • Avoiding injuries or rehabilitating an existing injury
  • Improving cardiovascular endurance
  • Muscle toning
  • Strengthening
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Medical considerations such as diabetes, heart disease and osteoperosis

The physiotherapy staff will construct a home-based or clinic program depending upon your needs. The program will be formulated with or without equipment, again depending upon your personal situation and needs.

Manual Therapy

Manual therapy involves the treatment of various orthopaedic conditions by the use of a physiotherapist's hands. This may include therapist-assisted stretches, joint mobilizations and manipulations, local soft tissue massage and acupressure myofascial release.

Massage Therapy

Local massage techniques are often incorporated into an individualized treatment program. Site specific therapeutic or relaxation soft tissue massage and acupressure techniques may be performed by licensed physiotherapists.

Mechanical Traction

An advanced state of the art mechanical traction unit provides the ability to longitudinally stretch the neck and low back. The technique is comfortable and often utilized for the treatment of various spinal conditions including disc protrusions, degenerative disc disease and spinal arthritis.

A formalized 4, 6, & 12 week reconditioning program has been sanctioned by WCB and MPI. This program offers an extensive daily individualized exercise program to best prepare a patient to safely return to work or activities of daily living. Often emphasis is placed on work or daily activity simulated movements for re-training movement patterns safely.

Strengthening and Cardio Training

The gymnasium area of the clinic houses state of the art aerobic and strengthening equipment. This includes upright bikes, recumbent bikes, upper body cycle, elliptical, treadmills and a multi-user variable resistance exercise station and therapy balls. Often resisted and aerobic exercise is utilized in a patient's physiotherapy treatment regime.

Stretching and Posture Programs

Physiotherapist-assisted stretching and postural re-education techniques may be used in conjunction with patient home programs. Far too often, injuries are prolonged by pre-existing tight musculature and poor posture especially around the upper back and neck.

Stroke Recovery

The psychological and physical changes following a stroke can be devastating at times. The family as well is faced with the possibility of functional limitations by their loved one. Creekside is capable of developing an extensive rehabilitation program for your needs. The physiotherapists will take pride in ensuring support systems and other medical or rehabilitation needs are in place. Service is available at the clinic or within the home dependent upon scheduling and patient needs.

Taping and Strapping

Protective taping, tensoring and bandaging services and supplies are available for treatment of musculoskeletal injuries. Often athletes requiring "extra" support require taping in order to facilitate earlier return to activity. Specialized “kinesio” taping is also used to support, facilitate or inhibit muscle contraction.

TMJ Dysfunction and Craniofacial Pain Management

Creekside Physiotherapy in Winnipeg is pleased to offer a multi-disciplined team approach to TMJ Dysfunction and craniofacial pain. Together with the expertise of a dentist, orthodontist, and/or related oral specialist, successful management may be achieved.

A physiotherapist trained in this area has knowledge of the biomechanics of the TMJ and craniovertebral region. A comprehensive assessment will identify joint and capsular limitations, muscle dysfunction, acute disc derangements and post-surgical needs.

Treatment may include manual joint mobilization, massage and soft tissue stretching, anti-inflammatory modalities, and exercise prescription to restore ROM, strength and overall function.

Moist heat packs and a wax bath are extensively used at the clinic. Often "heat therapy" can expedite the healing process, allow for easier and faster gains in stretching and provide an environment for pain relief. Suitable problems include arthritis, sports injuries, tendonitis, post surgical rehab and countless more.
